Long Island Veterinary Specialists (LIVS) is one of the most respected centers for specialized veterinary care in the world. This reputation of excellence was forged over years by dedicated and extensively trained professionals whose main goal is to provide the highest quality of advanced medical and surgical care to companion animals. We at LIVS recognize the importance of the bond between companion animals and their families and strive to preserve and promote the quality and length of life of our patients. We appreciate the anxiety that pet owners experience when a beloved pet is confronted with an illness, and will do our best to reduce this anxiety by optimizing patient care as well as communication with pet owners and family veterinarians. Promoting and reinforcing the bond between pet owner, family veterinarian and the veterinary specialist is a fundamental principle of our hospital.
In addition to the compassion and experience of the personnel at LIVS, our facilities are "state of-the-art". Not only does LIVS have the typical array of advanced equipment generally found at a specialty veterinary center, but we have the most advanced forms of this equipment. For example, at 3.0 Tesla magnet strength, our MRI machine is twice as strong as the "standard" 1.5 Tesla strength magnets found at the vast majority of veterinary specialty centers and many human imaging centers (higher strength magnets mean better images with shorter anesthetic times). The doctors and support staff at LIVS have also pioneered several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and treatments. For instance, non-invasive thermographic imaging was developed for use in dogs at LIVS. In addition, several neurologic and orthopedic surgery procedures commonly performed in dogs and cats were developed and published by LIVS personnel and their collaborators. It is our goal to be at the forefront of veterinary specialist care not only by employing the latest developments in both human and veterinary medicine, but by contributing to those developments. Our patients are kept in comfortable, specially-designed hospital wards and are cared for by our 24-hour support staff. In addition to the attention provided to our patients by our in-house personnel, we regularly consult with collaborating leaders of our profession as well as some in human medicine at other locations when deemed in the best interest of our patients' health.
Members of LIVS cooperate daily with your pet's family veterinarian. Your skilled family veterinarian views our hospital as an extension of his or her diagnostic and treatment arsenal for conditions that require diagnostics and/or treatments that are not generally available in a general veterinary practice. Your veterinarian is an essential part of the team of professionals who will interact and share experience and expertise to reach the best outcome possible for your pet's condition. Please note that our hospital is a specialty referral center and not involved with general health maintenance procedures (for example-neuters and spays, vaccinations etc). These essential services are best delivered by your family veterinarian during regularly-scheduled health care visits.
